Old Is New Again

Consumers want the newest, latest and greatest products, right? Not always. While shoppers gravitate toward new items and updated versions of their favorites, several companies are finding out that the next success story may lie in turning back the hands of time.

Body Shop is the latest retailer to learn that lesson.

Through its new Originals line, the eco-minded purveyor of personal products has brought back a collection of bestsellers from its early days. Starting in October, classics like Dewberry Shower gel, Banana Shampoo and Carrot moisturizer – items that enjoyed their heyday in the 1980s – began reappearing on store shelves.

Body Shop, now part of L’Oreal, held a promotion earlier this year inviting company enthusiasts to vote for their favorite product in the Originals line.

Last year Lush cosmetics turned back the calendar pages by introducing
RetroLush. A year later it remains among the most popular sections on the company website.
