From Vacant to Valuable

Highland Village has a Maison Weiss, a Williams-Sonoma and a Tossini. Yet, this luxury shopping center in Houston is unlike similar lifestyle centers across the nation. Developers here have converted vacant space into customer amenities.
In one instance, a space formerly occupied by a retail shop is being used by a non-profit to operate a weekend animal adoption center. In its three-year existence, the location has placed more than 1,650 dogs and cats.
Space for local farmers, growers and producers to sell their fresh goods was carved out of a parking lot tucked behind the center. Prior to the debut of the Farmer’s Market, that area was rarely used by shoppers; now it has become a weekend gathering place.
