Consumers have certainly altered their eating habits during the recession. Cooking from scratch using less-expensive ingredients is one way to economize. Another is to bring home prepared foods and heat ‘n’ eat dishes.

Among those who still dine out, many have trimmed costs by “trading down from full-service restaurants to lower-priced but still higher quality fresh food,” according to foodservice industry consultancy Technomic.

Online retailing has been the greatest beneficiary of the economic downturn: Nothing in the last decade has given e-commerce more of a boost.

The way the drug store industry has been consolidating, it’s not at all surprising that CVS and Walgreen are the leaders in increasing market share among food, drug and mass merchandise retailers. Both have been gobbling up competitors — Long’s Drug Stores in the case of CVS, a number of smaller acquisitions prior to this year’s takeover of Duane Reade for Walgreen — as well as opening new stores throughout the recession. Rite Aid is more or less coast-to-coast now, but it continues to sputter in the aftermath of the Brooks and Eckerd acquisitions of a couple years ago.

The Sweet 16 that have managed to sustain their sizzle

To make the Hot 100 Retailers list is a noteworthy achievement; to have sustained that sizzle for five consecutive years in the midst of the worst economic environment in generations is especially impressive.

Hardgoods

Just what long-term impact the recession has had on hardgoods retailers is still difficult to gauge. Lowe’s and The Home Depot, for instance, each saw sales retreat in 2009, yet both increased share of market as rivals like 84 Lumber and independent home centers, building supply dealers, hardware chains and lumber yards fared worse.

The Hot 100 Retailers section is the definitive annual ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing retail companies. Rankings are determined by increases in domestic sales between 2008 and 2009; all retail companies with domestic sales in excess of $300 million were eligible. Hot 100 retailers managed average year-over-year domestic sales growth of 8.5 percent—quite an accomplishment, given that the economy was very weak in the first half of 2009.
